Half-Life 2: Deathmatch ist ein Multiplayer-Shooter im Half-Life 2 Universum. Als Combinesoldat oder Rebell kämpft man im Spiel jeder gegen jeden oder im Team-Modus Menschen gegen Combine, ohne weitere Ziele. Als Waffe steht jedem Spieler unter anderem auch die Gravity Gun aus Half-Life 2 zur Verfügung, was diesen Deathmatch-Shooter von anderen wesentlich unterscheidet. Damit wäre das Wichtigste über das Mehrspieler-Game gesagt, könnte man meinen, doch die Entstehungsgeschichte war viel außergewöhnlicher.

Im Mai 2004, ein halbes Jahr vor dem Release, präsentiert Valve Half-Life 2 erneut auf der Spielemesse E3. "Eine der großen Fragen ist, was ist mit dem Multiplayer?", ruft Valve-Boss Gabe Newell in die Menge nur um die Frage einen Augenblick später selbst zu beantworten: "Wir haben beschlossen das populärste Online-Actiongame mit der Kraft der Source-Engine zu kombinieren". Zu sehen ist Counter-Strike: Source, welches jeder Käufer von Half-Life 2 damals kostenlos dazu erhält. Damit war die Frage des Multiplayers für Half-Life 2 also beantwortet und nach dem Release am 16. November 2004 füllten sich langsam die CS:S-Server.

10 Tage später kündigt Valve allerdings eine "kleine Überraschung" für die darauf folgende Woche an. Die Community rätselt um was es sich dabei handeln könnte, bis am 30. November ein Artwork auftaucht (siehe rechts), welches alle Zweifel ausräumt. Nur wenige Stunden später wird Half-Life 2: Deathmatch über Steam veröffentlicht, alle Half-Life 2-Besitzer durften es sich kostenlos herunterladen.

Maps, Waffen & Spieler

Die am 30. November 2004 veröffentlichte Version von Half-Life 2: Deathmatch enthielt nur zwei Maps, welche an zwei Singleplayer-Levels aus Half-Life 2 angelehnt sind. Zusammen mit dem Release des Spiels startete Valve auch einen Mapping-Contest. Gewinnsummen von mehreren Tausend US-Dollar veranlassten zahlreiche Hobby-Mapper ihre Level einzusenden, die drei Besten wurden in den offiziellen Map-Pool aufgenommen. Einige Zeit später veröffentlicht Valve selbst noch zwei weitere Maps, damit gibt es nun sieben offizielle Mehrspieler-Karten:

Nicht nur Maps, sondern auch Waffen waren in den ersten Wochen nach dem Release von Half-Life 2: Deathmatch Mangelware. So fehlte beispielsweise die Brechstange als Nahkampfwaffe. Diese wurde allerdings wenig später zusammen mit dem Stun Stick (Elektroschocker) veröffentlicht, wenig später auch die SLAM, eine fernzündbare Granate mit Lichtschranken. Ansonsten sind alle Waffen aus dem Half-Life 2: Singleplayer-Modus verfügbar, mit Ausnahme der blauen Super-Gravity-Gun. Die Standard-Ausführung der Schwerkraftswaffe erhält jeder Spieler aber von Beginn an, während mächtige Waffen wie der Raketenwerfer nur selten und an schwer erreichbaren Stellen vorkommen. Im Gegensatz zu den meisten anderen Multiplayer-Shootern spielt die Physik in Half-Life 2: Deathmatch eine entscheidende Rolle. Herumliegendes Gerümpel wie Kisten, Kloschüsseln und natürlich Benzinfässer dienen als Munition für die Gravity-Gun. Besonders geschickte Spieler können auf ihn geworfene Objekte noch in der Luft abfangen und zum Absender zurückschicken.

Als auswählbare Spielermodelle stehen die vier verschiedenen Typen an Combinesoldaten sowie die Rebellen zur Verfügung. Für welche man sich entscheidet, hat spielerisch keine Relevanz, sie unterscheiden sich rein optisch und akustisch. Außerdem starten die Combinesoldaten mit dem aus Half-Life 2 bekannten Elektroschocker als Nahkampfwaffe, während Rebellen zur Brechstange von Gordon Freeman greifen.

Gameplay und Spielmechanik

Wie der Name schon sagt, handelt es sich bei diesem Multiplayer-Spiel um ein Deathmatch-Game, es kämpft also jeder gegen jeden und nach dem Tod kann man sofort wieder mitspielen. Je nach Server ist es allerdings auch möglich, im Team zu spielen. Dabei werden die Spieler auf Rebellen und Combines aufgeteilt und bekämpfen sich nun gemeinsam. Bis auf den Team-Charakter ändert sich am grundlegenen Spielprinzip nichts, es gibt also keine Basen, die beschützt oder Flaggen, die gestohlen werden müssen. Die offizielle Map dm_runoff bietet allerdings in Anlehnung auf die beliebte Half-Life 1: Deathmatch Map Crossfire die Möglichkeit, einen Luftangriff zu starten, der alle Spieler auf der Map tötet, die es nicht in den sicheren Schutzbunker schaffen.

Wem dieses Spielprinzip auf Dauer zu langweilig wird, der kann mit diversen Mods (z.B. Half-Life 2: Capture The Flag, Half-Life 2: Assault, Jailbreak!) Abhilfe schaffen. Half-Life 2: Deathmatch zählt, nicht zuletzt aufgrund des einmaligen Gameplays durch die Gravity Gun, neben Unreal Tournament 2004 und Quake 3: Arena zu den beliebtesten Deathmatch-Shootern der Gegenwart.
